Whats New on TV for August

The Age of Peak TV shows no sign of slowing down. Summer winding down signals the start of a new season of TV, with some exciting new and returning series coming your way. Cable networks competing with streaming services and streaming outlets battling for TV dominance. The result – the age of Peak TV – meaning more series, more mini series, and more limited series for everyone, earlier than ever.

Here are some of the most anticipated TV premieres for August.

Animals Season 3 (HBO Canada – #302) – Premiered August 3 at 11:30 PM EST

This adult animated comedy series ventures into Earth’s least inhabitable environment, a human-less New York City. Season 3 picks up a few years after a toxic bomb wiped out all of NYC’s human residents – animals have since rebuilt society including lovelorn rats, gender-questioning pidgeons, aging bedbugs all in the midst of a midlife crisis. The awkward small talk, moral ambiguity and existential woes of non-human urbanites prove remarkably similar to those of humans. Following the example set by previous seasons, animals will continue to heavily feature major comedic guest stars: Awkwafina, Marcia Clark, David Harbour, Jameela jamil, Lucy Liu, Tatiana Maslany, Princess Nokia, Aperna Nancherla, Amanda Seales, Jacob Tremablay and Demi Moore as a recurring star. Catch up on VOD.

Ballers Season 4 (HBO Canada – #302) – August 12 at 10 PM EST

Does the world ever tire of watching the Rock on screen? With two box office movies in 2018, several in the works, an announced sequel to Jumanji and now season 4 of Ballers, it would seem the answer is no. For those new to Ballers, this series looks at the lives of former and current NFL players, following ex-NFL superstar Spencer Strasmore (Dwayne Johnson) as he reinvents himself as a financial planner. In this new season, Spencer takes his skills to LA as he looks to expand his roster of clients and horizons in the world of sports.

Fear the Walking Dead Season 4 (AMC – #36) – August 12 at 9 PM EST

Fear the Walking Dead gets a reboot this season with new show runners, a major time jump, several new cast regulars, and sees the show replanted into a new filming location to Austin, Texas. Fans now get to see Alisha purely as her own character, with no biological family after the death of her mother and brother, opening up new journeys and narratives for her to play out. Showrunners have promised a new villain, the likes of which the show has not seen before, as well as tensions between the newly established group of characters – Alisha, Luciana and Strand. The journey will explore themes of danger, love, heartbreak, loss and ultimately, hope in a post-apocalyptic world.

Insecure Season 3  (HBO Canada – #302)  – August 12 at 10:30 PM EST

Insecure returns with best friends, Issa and Molly, as they deal with real life flaws, and an endless series of uncomfortable everyday experiences. Created by Issa Rae and Writer/Comic Larry Wilmore (The Daily Show with Jon Stewart), Insecure is loved by fans for its hilarious, female-focused take on what it means to be a black millennial in America. After a second season filled with creative gambits, the trailer for season 3 signals Issa and Molly continuing to try to do better with more adventures and even more insecurities.

Real Housewives of Dallas Season 3 (Slice – #41) – August 15 at 9 PM EST

After an explosive and shocking second season, the Real Housewives of Dallas returns. From the look of things, season 3 will be dramatic as ever – Brandi plans on adopting a baby after her fertility struggle, Leanne dons a wedding dress (for a fashion show), skinny dipping in front of the entire crew, shifting alliances, and new frenemies. As always, RHOD will be filled heated conversations, and Leanne will be exhausted by all fighting – even her WEAVE is exhausted. Hold on to your cowboy hats, RHOD fans.

Mr Mercedes Season 2 (Super Channel Fuse- #334) – August 22 at 10 PM EST

For those not familiar with Mr. Mercedes, this series is another TV adaptation of content machine Stephen King’s novel about a retired police detective being stalked by a killer.  Season 2 picks up one year after Detective Bill Hodges successfully thwarted Brady Hartfield’s attempt to perpetrate a second mass murder. Since the incident, Hartsfield has been hospitalized in a vegetative state and Retired Bill Hodges has done his best to move on from his Brady obsession. When inexplicable occurrences begin to affect hospital staff members attending to Brady, Hodges is haunted by the feeling that Brady is somehow responsible.
