Golden Globes 2018

As always with the Golden Globes, there was plenty to talk about on the night – from popular culture to the red carpet, to the awards themselves. With a big Canadian win and several surprise victories, the 76th Golden Globe Awards were eventful.

Here are the highlights:

The two big winners this year were Bohemian Rhapsody, which won both Best Drama and Best Actor in a Drama Film, and Green Book that won three Golden Globes including Best Picture in the Musical/Comedy category. A Star is Born, Bradley Cooper’s acclaimed remake, was believed to sweep the award show.

Following Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg’s monologue about Crazy Rich Asians as the first studio film with an Asian-American lead since Ghost in the Shell and Aloha, Emma Stone hilariously shouted “I’M SORRY!” from the audience referencing her role as a part-Asian character in Aloha.

Sandra Oh made history in a number of ways: She is the first person of Asian descent and the first Canadian to host The Golden Globes, and is the first Asian woman to win Best Actress in a TV drama in more than 3 decades for her lead role in Killing Eve. As host and recipient, Oh recognized the diversity: “I said yes to the fear of being on this stage tonight because I wanted to be here to look out into this audience and witness this moment of change. I’m not fooling myself. Next year could be different. It probably will be, but right now, this moment is real.”

Though less political than the last few years, this year’s ceremony carried strong messages of female empowerment. Regina King, who won Best Supporting Actress for her role in If Beale Street Could Talk, pledged to make sure that all of her future projects will be 50% women and encouraged others to do the same. Glenn Close, winner for Actress in Best Drama, also made a touching tribute to her mother, empowering women to follow their hearts.
